Harassment and sexual misconduct – how our university responds

This overview module is designed to provide learners with a foundational understanding of the OfS’s E6 requirements. This course is widely customisable and encourages universities to input their commitments, principles, policies and, most importantly, their single comprehensive source of information (CSI), which they are required to create and make visible and accessible.  

The content in this course is designed to provide learners with a firm understanding of what constitutes harassment and sexual misconduct, and the how to proactively prevent and address these issues and protect students.  

There are two versions of this course, one for Staff members and one for Students. The content designed for Students may be applicable in a Student Induction module.

Disclosure by students 

This module was developed in collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University and is designed to inform staff members about their responsibilities when receiving disclosures of harassment, hate incidents/crimes or sexual misconduct. The course provides practical guidance on how to appropriately and effectively respond to disclosures of this nature and look after yourself following a disclosure by a student.

Supporting students experiencing domestic violence 

This module is designed to aid staff members and HE organisations more broadly with guidance on how to support students experiencing domestic violence. The course defines domestic violence, covers key legislation and explores the impact of domestic violence on students. The module offers guidance on identifying this form of abuse, how to support a student experiencing it and recommends how to prevent it through policy, training, support and risk assessments.

Sexual harassment in HE 

Our HE-specific sexual harassment module ensures that staff members are made well aware of the relevant legislation relating to sexual harassment and are able to identify which behaviours constitute sexual harassment. The course also ensures learners understand the impact of sexual harassment and offers guidance on the steps to take if you experience or witness someone else experiencing sexual harassment. This module is rich with audio and scenarios to ensure the learners know how to apply their knowledge in real-life situations.

Active bystander 

This module is designed to teach staff members what it means to be an active bystander and why all employees are encouraged to become one. The course highlights inappropriate behaviour that should be challenged by an active bystander and offers practical guidance on how to intervene safely, appropriately and effectively as an active bystander in different situations.

Dignity and respect at work 

This module is designed to provide staff members with a firm understanding of dignity and respect and how to support a workplace culture where all employees feel comfortable and appreciated. The course highlights why dignity and respect is important, explains how a lack of dignity and respect can manifest, recognises current dignity and respect challenges and explains how to demonstrate dignity and respect.

Student bystander intervention  

This module was funded by the Office for Students specifically for the HE sector and developed in conjunction with Coventry University. The course defines what it means to be a bystander and offers guidance on the various safe interventions that students can choose to adopt. The course ensures that students understand the importance of intervening safely.

Consent on campus 

This course was created with the charity Rape Crisis and is designed to ensure students have a solid understanding of what consent is. It explores how certain situations and contexts can affect consent, showcases some myth-busting in relation to consent and offers practical guidance on how to get consent. This module ensures students can enjoy their social opportunities at university safely.

Freedom of speech

This module introduces learners to the basics of what freedom of speech is, why it matters and what the key UK laws around freedom of speech are. The module also explores student perceptions of freedom of speech and the impact of digital communications in our modern world on freedom of speech. Learners can find guidance on the steps to take to secure freedom of speech.
